In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to forget to tell our loved ones how much they mean to us and how much we care and appreciate them.  But don’t be disheartened as it doesn’t have to take a lot of planning.  Love is in the little details that make up our lives.


Do you ever feel like sometimes there aren’t enough hours in a day? Do you ever feel like you catch up with your partner infrequently, often late at night, when you’re too tired to speak?  Or you’re both too busy, and your schedules happen to collide? 

There are work school outings, dinners, sporting practice, homework to supervise, dinners with friends household chores, and so the list goes on.  Do you feel like you need to make a date night to spend some quality one on one time with your other half?  Time when you’re not sleeping? 

If this sounds anything like you then, I think this will be right up your ally.  I’m sure you will enjoy these tips for keeping each other close at heart, even if you can’t always be as physically close as you’d like.  

It’s all about communicating and sharing in those little things that make a huge difference in our lives.  Here are ten easy ways to make your feelings known:

1.          Birthday love letter.  There is something powerful when you put pen to paper and write a letter.  A few years ago, my husband and I decided to write a love letter to each other’s birthday.  I think I came across an article in a magazine about Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. 

In the article, it read that they used to do this instead of exchanging expensive gifts.  Well! Even though it didn’t work for them, I’m glad to say we found it to be the opposite for us. It has become the staple part of our birthday ritual that we value the most. 

Writing down all the things you love, and treasure about the other person holds deep and sentimental feelings, especially to see the expression on their face when they read your thoughts about how you care and value them.   

In most cases, it outweighs any gift you could possibly imagine and is something to reminisce and cherish even when the birthday has passed. Share this with your children also if you have any, and they will never need to doubt your love for them. 

Of course, there is no need to wait until it’s your loved one’s birthday to write them a letter from the heart – anytime is as good as any to express how you truly feel in a letter.  

2. Sit down and discuss your day.  When we can we sit down at the dinner table while enjoying an evening meal, this is an excellent opportunity to take it in turns to talk about the adventures we had in the day.   Even our two and a half year old joins in. 

For quite some time, he would talk about who he saw instead of what he did, but now he’s catching on.  Another we like to do it talks about the best and worst thing that happened in the day. On many occasions, something would happen throughout the day that would allow you to pause and reflect on what were the highlights and lowlights.


3.         Always find the time to celebrate all your partner’s successes with them, let them see and know that you do not take them for granted.   Please give them a high five or leisure together over a glass of wine.  Whatever the scale of the success calls for, be there for each other. 

4.         Do not hold back how impressed you may be by your partner’s performance; let them know you’re proud of them and say it.  I think everyone loves being told by someone they care about that they are proud of them.  

5.            Never underestimate the power of a hug – show and teach your children to hug you back.  My five-year-old son Jack loves hugs, and that’s a healthy thing.  He’s getting them and enjoys giving them. 

There are moments when he will hug someone if he thinks or feels they are a bit sad, but most of the time, he will ask first if they would like ‘a Big Jack hug’, now if that’s not showing love, I don’t know what is.

6.         Send a particular photo that has sentimental feelings to you and tell them why it’s so important – it could be a Show & Tell Card.  It’s a new type of greeting card that lets you stick your photo on the front and is blank inside so you can write what you like.   Check out for more details.

7.         Share your experience.  For example, it could be a movie, a new CD, a magazine article, or a short story.  Write about what you read or saw and your likes or dislikes.   And make this a habit.

8.         Compliments.  Everyone loves complements so never pass up the opportunity to share them with your loved one and give their mood that extra boost.  You can either say it verbally or write it down on a small sheet of paper and just put it in an unexpected place for your loved one to find.

9.         Dance.  It doesn’t take but a second to find a great song that brings back great memories, put it on and dance and enjoy each other’s company.  – make it about  5 minutes maximum, but it is an excellent way to reconnect physically with each other in between dinner and dessert or at the end of a long day, or you could make it your unique way to start the day. 


10.          Thoughtful gestures.  Doing something unexpected, especially when you’re loved one is busy and having a stressful moment, is a beautiful way to show them how much you care and understand what they must be experiencing and that they have your support. 

Showing your partner how much you love them is not time-consuming, a little goes a long way.  You will be rewarded many times over for your effort.  Now, Get to loving today!
